Although the documentary was primarily centered on the latest generation’s focus on "likes," it has impacted many areas of their lives. My project focuses on these areas of impact in particular:
- How companies take advantage of this generation's obsession with "likes"
- How his or her romantic relationships are impacted by being online
- How even his or her friendships can be dependent on "likes"
"Social media is changing the way we communicate and the way we are perceived, both positively and negatively. Every time you post a photo, or update your status, you are contributing to your own digital footprint and personal brand."
- Amy Jo Martin
However, it’s not all bad news! My project also brings out both benefits and consequences of the "like" culture. I don’t think the documentary is advising that people should avoid using "likes" and social media, but the documentary brings awareness to users about just how much their online interactions are affecting their lives and, ultimately, society. This awareness is important so that today’s generation understands that every “like”, tag and comment is being collected by corporate marketers.
